Golf weekend and bits…
26.7.2008 von Jean Jacques.
July 26th
We did it and had good fun. Met up at 8am (had to get up earlier than during the week), a short taxi ride and we absorbed our first 1 hour golf training lesson followed by 30 minutes alone at the range. it went very well and we feel confident that after another 2 hours of lessons we can get loose on the course… So we have booked again for next Saturday.
All this followed by a nice lunch in a French restaurant called 570 before hitting town for serious shopping.
July 24th
I finally gave in. After so many invitations and finally agreed to give it a go this coming weekend. Philip, Benjamin and I are going to get some lessons starting Saturday morning. If we like it and think we can keep up with the others, we shall play regularly. I suppose a few rounds of golf at the weekend is a way of keeping out of mischief.

Hot in Shanghai…
23.7.2008 von Jean Jacques.
It does not seem possible but I moved to Asia 16 weeks ago!!! The interesting part is that I have physically been in Shanghai only 6 of these 16 weeks and it does not look like the pattern is going to change in the coming couple of months.
Anyway, it is still very hot in Shanghai, rarely drops under 30c. It is therefore important to find little places where one can cool down a little. This is Barbarossa Lounge, just across the street from my office, in the middle of a little parc. One of the favorite place for lunch this week.

I was in Melbourne last week
20.7.2008 von Jean Jacques.
Flew in overnight on Sunday evening via Sydney where I missed bumping into the Pope by a few minutes. The airport in Sydney was a disaster due to the security measures and the thousands of kids / boy scouts etc etc waiting patiently but not necessarily in silence. What a mess it was,
I had a lovely view of Melbourne’s skyline from my hotel room.
It was good to be in winter for a few days. Quite a change to the 30c+ in Shanghai. Apparently it was snowing on the hills an hour away by car from there.
Did not have time to do much though apart from eating some delicious oysters a couple of nights. A must…
The hotel just outside the city was not brilliant, I called it an upmarket youth hostel, but I suppose it would be ok in the summer months for a couple of days.
Flew back on Saturday.
I normally do not like day time flights especially when it takes more or less 12 hours, I find it impossible to sleep during the day and I have seen all the films showing.
There is a major advantage, one can admire the view… It is impossible to capture the colors and the vastness on camera though.
and you come across some superb islands lost in the middle of the ocean vastness.
This by the way is more or less the spot where the USS Indianapolis was sunk in 1945. I was wondering why it was shown on the Flight map system on the plane. There must be 1000s of sunk ships but their location is never shown. Well it was a famous ship since it carried the first operational atomic bomb. Not necessarily a good thing but a first nevertheless.
